It is estimated that of the 3.9 billion hectares of the world's forests, 86% are publicly owned. This includes approximately 200 million hectares of tribal and community-managed forests. Only in the USA is more forestland under private ownership, with non-industrial and industrial owners together accounting for 57% of forest ownership.
